The Linksys WUMC710 Wi-Fi Media Connector Bridge is a wireless media connector to add game consoles, media players and internet connected televisions easily and quickly to your home network.

Linksys WUMC710 Media Bridge

The Linksys WUMC710 is an easy to use media connector bridge that connects wired devices to a 5 GHz router using WPS for easy setup. The Linksys WUMC710 works well with routers that use the WPS feature but only works with a router that has a 5 GHz band.

The new wireless standard is close to being finalized and companies are jumping to get into the market with new routers and other devices for networks. Linksys has already released new routers and with that a new media connector that makes it easy to add devices like internet connected televisions.

A media connector bridges the devices that are internet ready and your home router to make connecting them easy and quick using the WPS feature. The Linksys WUMC710 uses four rear internet connections and push button wireless connectivity to connect your devices to your router.

Linksys WUMC710 Whats in the Box

The Universal Media Connector has speeds up to 1300 Mbps using the newest wireless standard to get the best speeds possible in your network. The Universal Media Connector connects to your Linksys network with the push of a button using WPS push button setup.

The setup uses the quick connect feature that many popular routers have built in to connect your bridge to your network but only using the 5 GHz band. The Linksys Universal Media Connector can connect to any 802.11AC, A or N router that has the 5 GHz band without a problem.

The Linksys WUMC710 had the same network speeds when I tested it through the Linksys EA6500 router wirelessly and directly connected to the router without the bridge. The bridge did not slow down the signal and I am able to both watch video and game online through the media bridge without any problems.

The media bridge is an easy way to connect computers and devices to a network using the cat5e cables then wirelessly to your network even if you do not have a Linksys router. The device was made in conjunction with the newest Wi-Fi standard and only uses the 5 GHz band but it does work very well.

Front & Back of Linksys WUMC710

Connecting devices like a PlayStation 3 or even a media center PC in my living room is very easy and only takes the push of two buttons. The Linksys WUMC710 works very well and most importantly it works with as little setup as possible using the already well-established WPS push button feature.

I highly recommend the Linksys Universal Media Connector for an easy and simple media bridge for your network.

Linksys EA6500 Wi-Fi Wireless Router

The Linksys EA6500 is a smart wireless router that has plenty of features including apps for Apple devices but it does lack the same apps for android phones and tablets. Setting up the router is as simple as using the enclosed CD and adding a few simple entries.

The EA6500 uses both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz so you have two channels to choose from for the best performance and lower interference choices for your network. The EA6500 router has what they term SMART cloud based features and apps but most of the apps are for Apple devices.

The EA6500 is a new class of wireless with an upcoming 802.11ac specification that has not yet been fully released but the company has released the router anyway. If there are any changes they can release a firmware update to get the router up to date with the specifications.

Linksys EA6500 Whats in the Box

The EA6500 has the four rear access connections for wired network devices as well as the wireless connection using either a password or the WPS button. A new feature called Smart Tap is supposed to allow you to swipe an RFID card on a device like a tablet to connect to your network automatically.

I could not get mine to work with my Nexus 7 tablet and looking around the network I am not the only one with this problem so this feature may be a bit premature for use. The router does work well and with only a few required reboots during the past two months has worked almost flawlessly.

Main features of the router include a very nice interface that has troubleshooting, a device list, parental controls, guest access, USB storage options and the main settings. The Linksys EA6500 does have a lot of features and the main interface pages make for a nice handy way to access all your controls and features.

Linksys EA6500 Connections

The easy to use device list gives you a simple way to find all of the devices on your network with ones currently connected being highlighted. Wireless security is easy to set up and the CD guides you through the features and how to get things safe and secure on your small network.

You can set devices or programs as well as games as priority for the router so that gaming, streaming video or specific computers is the first to receive bandwidth on your network. Another nice feature is the app for both android and Apple that allows control of your network while your away.

The Linksys EA6500 works well as a wireless router with good range and a secure hardware based firewall for your home network whether you’re a serious gamer or just a network surfer. The firewall passes several tests that I threw at it with blocking or hiding ports and not allowing test programs access to my network.

Linksys EA6500 Interface

As far as getting into my network with the password you can easily add devices or simply use the WPS button when active to add your tablets, smartphones or laptops to your network. The EA6500 has all the features you could want and need in a home or small business router with a great interface.

I have only had the network crash on me twice in the last couple of months and have easily gotten it back up and working with a simple reboot of the router. Every router I have had has dropped my network offline and a simple reboot of the EA6500 gets it back up in no time.

The cloud management works well and all the features I have worked with have been easy to use with a simple setup for easy router use. I do not have the capability to test speeds other than main internet speed but the router has performed well for my use.

I have had no real problems with the EA6500 router and can easily recommend this as a home or small business router with plenty of great features.

Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Malware Protection

Kaspersky has released the newest version of their complete security suite called Kaspersky Pure 3.0 Total Security for Real Time Malware Protection against viruses, malware and spyware as well as other security features. Kaspersky Pure 3.0 includes malware protection for both real time and scanning as well as other handy tools like password manager and online backup.

Kaspersky Pure 3.0 allows protection for up to three Windows computers and even allows control of those extra computers for virus scanning, updating and other features within the Kaspersky Pure software. This means one networked computer can control all the Kaspersky functions of other networked computers without having to actually go to that computer.

For simple home networks where one computer is in a different part of the home being able to update, run scans or backup your computer is only a few clicks away but the Kaspersky Pure 3.0 offers much more for an ultimate PC security solution. Malware and viru protection is only the tip of the protection you get with secure cloud based storage for backups, secure online banking and shopping, password management and encryption for important files.

Kaspersky PURE Features Malware Protection

Security suites these days are pretty common and keeping people interested in your brand of not only malware and virus protection but other features is what is going to set one program or suite apart form others come time to purchase something. If you can get a password manager, online storage and other features like those offered by Kaspersky in their newest security solution without having to pay separately for them you can get people interested in your program.

Anitvirus and other malware is just the beginning with Kaspersky and they do offer a good range of features for their full security solution in one program with a very simple installation and setup. You can buy Kaspersky PURE 3.0 over the internet or as a boxed set with a simple and quick installation even if your computer is infected with malware or viruses.

You can create a rescue disc for installing and removing malware from a computer that is infected including ransom ware which is a particular virus that infects a computer and tells the owner that in order to continue using the PC you need to pay to remove the infection. Another common ransom ware is a fake FBI warning that says you need to pay because you did something wrong or went to an illegal site and need to pay fines to the government.

I received an infected computer from a relative during the review period for my copy of Kaspersky PURE and used a rescue disc for the program to remove the infection without having full control of the computer. I created a Rescue disc on a USB flash drive to allow me to get into and recover the operating system form the ransom ware and clean out all parts of the infection.

PURE Backup Manager

Once I ran the scans I did not use the program so a quick uninstall removed the Kaspersky PURE program easily so I could install a different program for security that my relative had been using but did not save them from the ransom ware infection in the first place. Sometimes we cannot help ourselves and accidentally infect our own computer by downloading software and installing other things o\n our computers which is probably how my relative got infected in the first place.

Kaspersky is a parent tested parent approved Winner from PTPA Media Awards Program.

While this specific example may not be useful to everyone looking at buying Kaspersky PURE it does illustrate the usefulness of a suite of programs in being able to create the rescue disc for another computer to remove an infection even if you don’t plan on a full installation. Kaspersky has other features that are just as useful on a day to day basis such as the password manager and parental controls which are both great ways to make access as easy as possible while still keeping day to day security always at the forefront.

Kaspersky PURE is yet another greta product and even though I did have some installation problems on a second computer I was able to find answers in the Kaspersky forum to solve my instllation problems and get the program fully installed and running. I now have full control of several computers on my network and can easily ensure I have current protection and can update and scan from any location on my network.

Kaspersky PURE is a greta suite of programs and doe sinlcude the top virus protection that is also independently tested to ensure it works onn current and past infections from several companies including AV Comparatives. Independent testing is important to ensure the company is using the best protection you can buy for your computer security instead of cheating you out of money for protection that is less than the best.

PURE Password Manager

Kaspersky PURE 3.0 is a great security suite and one that is easy to use without having to refer to the company or their website for help but rest assured if you do need help a chat, forum posting and one on one help is available for purchased products. If you are having problems a quick search of their knowledge base may turn up a simple answer but chats and emails may also give you the help you need for particularly difficult problems.

While using the Kaspersky PURE 3.0 program I did not have any problems I could not solve with simple help form the questions already answered in their forums and frequently asked questions. The program has installed easily on a couple of my computers and has been invaluable for my day to day work with simple tasks such as password management

Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

Razer has released the first true 7.1 surround sound headset that includes ten discrete drivers in the two ear cups for a true surround sound experience. The Razer Tiamat 7.1 is a true surround sound headset with five discrete drivers in each ear piece and connects to your computer using the five analog audio connections and a USB for power.

The Razer Tiamat comes with the headset with inline controller, mini USB adapter, extra ear piece covers, certificate of authenticity and user’s manual all in a really nice box. The Razer Tiamat 7.1 has the inline controller with a large dial for volume control and a smaller dial switch for volume control of the individual speaker channels.

The controller also has the mute button, external speaker button and 7.1 button for switching between 2.0 and 7.1 audio as well as a connection for an adapter that connects a speaker set to the controller. The addition of a connection on the controller to add external speakers means no disconnecting your analog audio connections to switch between the headset and speakers.

The headset ear pieces have a smoked but clear plastic over the drivers so you can see the five speakers inside each ear piece but you can also use the additional covers to hide them. These side covers use four magnets to attach to the sides but I find the looks just fine without the black covers.

Whats in the Box

The sides of the Razer Tiamat also have the green glowing Razer logo, it had to be somewhere, on each ear piece for good looks while most of the rest of the headset is black. The headband has some green stitching but the main band that connects the headset is made from a dark gray plastic while the controller and cable is black.

The Razer Tiamat uses one of the five analog connections for a microphone which works very well for gaming and chat communication. The Tiamat microphone is a unidirectional boom microphone that retracts into the left head piece for convenient storage when not in use.

I had no problem’s hearing myself talking over chat and Skype as well as over a game using a couple of computers for in game chat and voice as a test. The microphone gives clear voice over the computer for general voice using onboard sound but is much better when using a dedicated sound card.

Like many things with computers the addition of a dedicated sound card adds a lot of quality to your sound experience and makes the headset a better one. I had no problems other than one I will mention shortly with USB power using both onboard sound and an Auzen X-Forte sound card with the Razer Tiamat.

Cables, Controllers & Contoller

The headset has a stretch cord band that rests on top of your head as well as a larger plastic band that helps to keep the headset snug on your head. This two band system works well and helps to keep the headset comfortable while also keeping the ear pieces snug.

The ear cushions are replaceable but due to the newer release they may not be up on the site as yet, the headsets themselves are even backordered as of this writing. It seems that the Razer Tiamat is a highly wanted item and I can see why just reading other reviews but the real test is using it yourself.

The Razer Tiamat connects to your computer using the four analog connections that are your center, side, front and rear speakers with another analog connection for microphone and the USB for power. I will say this and try to emphasize this in my review that the headset quality depends mostly on this USB power connection.

I connected the headset to one motherboard surround sound and had a problem right off the bat with noise when no audio was playing and this continued to the next motherboard that I tried. I had purchased a new motherboard and after some setup during the trial period with the Razer Tiamat I swapped the motherboard out on my main work computer.

I tried the new Tiamat on this motherboard, an Asus Sabertooth 990FX, thinking it would have both a better onboard audio and better USB but I still had noticeable noise. After some checking with another computer and other things like a tablet and Google Chrome book I figured out that it was the USB powered part of the headset that was introducing the noise.

I cleared this up by connecting the USB power to an adapter instead of my computer and got rid of all noise over the headset, they work great once you get rid of the noise. I found a few other reviews that also have this same issue and corrected it simply by using an external USB power adapter and this issue is addressed on the Razer Tiamat website.

You can use the Tiamat with a stereo output from devices like an iPhone or MP3 player using the single stereo front speaker connection but you do need a USB power source. I found it easy enough to use the speakers on a Google laptop with the single stereo output and the single USB connection that the Chrome book has for the power source.

The Tiamat uses the five discrete or separate drivers in each headset so you have the surround sound with full 7.1 surround which means some great positional gaming. I had a true positional sound while gaming and had no problems telling where to point my weapons while playing games like Battlefield 3.

5 Discrete Drivers Per Ear

The Gaming was fantastic and truly 7.1 surround sound which really adds to the gaming experience, movies are also great but the Tiamat really excels at gaming. The discrete drivers give you real 7.1 surround sound but you will usually not tell the specific speakers playing at any one time during gameplay or movies.

I tried the Razer Tiamat with several games including Battlefield 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Crysis 2 along with movies like Transformer 3 and Black Hawk Down. All the movies and gaming I threw at the Razer Tiamat turned out really well and I thoroughly enjoyed all the experiences with the 7.1 headset.

The Razer Tiamat really works well during gaming and gives you not only a much better gaming experience but can really help in gaming for first person shooters. Playing on Battlefield 3 I could tell much better where the enemies were and could use the positional sound to help in getting more kills and even defend myself better.

Even though the Razer Tiamat does have a problem with noise from a poorly grounded USB connection it does work extremely well for a full 7.1 surround sound headset. I have used other expensive and really good headsets that also have this problem of noise form poor USB grounds and this is an easy one to fix for the Razer Tiamat by simply using an external USB power adapter.

The Razer Tiamat costs about $180 but for the full 7.1 surround sound using discrete drivers and is really worth the cost as an excellent gaming and entertainment headset. I highly recommend the Razer Tiamat for a top of the line full 7.1 surround sound headset that sounds excellent and is very comfortable for long gaming sessions.
