LG 29 inch UltraWide Monitor 29EB73-R

The LG UltraWide series of monitors includes 27 and 29 inch screens that offer plenty of screen real estate for business use but this monitor at home also makes a fantastic computer peripheral. The 21:9 ratio screen means the screen width is wider than normal monitors which allows for more open programs on screen.

The LG 29 Inch UltraWide model 29EB73-P has the 2560 by 1080 screen resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 5 millisecond response time for gray to gray. The 29 Inch UltraWide features a DVI-D, two HDMI and one Display Port connection for connecting to your computer, gaming console or DVD/Blu-ray player.

The back of the monitor has three USB connections with two being USB 3.0 and the USB connection for the computer while the speakers have an in and out stereo connection. The 7 watt speakers face down toward your desk or table and it works well enough for general use but for gaming or movies you might want headphones or separate speakers.

USB and audio connections may not be necessary but it’s always nice to have the option and for some home or business setups it may make a difference in not having to buy extra hardware. The USB 3.0 connection works well and is handy for using peripherals off your monitor like your keyboard or an external hard drive but is also for the Color Calibration.

Whats in the Box

The LG monitor stand uses a vertical spring bar for height adjustment with a good tilt as well that is easy to assemble with a clip that releases the spring pressure when assembling. You can also use the four mounting holes on the back to connect a monitor arm or wall mount to your LG monitor for the best positioning choice.

The IPS screen has a very wide viewing angle at 178 degress which means the screen will not get dark when viewed from the side. This makes a big difference when talking about a work environment or for entertainment for more than one person but may not be that big a feature for some.

The LG UltraWide 29 inch monitor makes a great work or business screen where having more than one program or window open enhances productivity. The wider screen also means better viewing in video games or for more open menus in programs like Photoshop or Premiere Pro where menus can be detached.

The 29 inch LG monitor model number 29EB73-P is a new monitor in the UltraWide category with a screen resolution of 2560 by 1080 pixels. That allows two programs or browsers open at 1280 pixels wide which is a common website size and makes a comfortable working width for programs.

Back of 29 Inch UltraWide Monitor

Switching back and forth between programs or browser pages can slow your work down so two monitors or a monitor wide enough can not only save time but increase productivity. I have been using two monitors so I can have one window or program open to search the internet or work in a program like Photoshop while also having a window open with my word article open.

Being able to write on one monitor while quickly searching websites about products on another just makes my work flow that much easier and more productive. It makes the difference between working and actually accomplishing and enjoying my work so I can get the job done and move on to my next assignment.

The wider monitor also means I can work while having a browser open or watch some television or my favorite music videos for a little light entertainment. While researching products or posting my articles to Yahoo and my word press sites I often watch some television like currently catching up on the past seasons of Deadliest Catch.

When I’m not actively writing and just posting articles or working on my site with updates I don’t have to pay full attention to my work and can enjoy a little television. A larger and wider monitor just makes more sense when you want to create a better work flow and Photoshop is one major concern for many professionals.

True Color Finder

You can view two different sources connected to the monitor at the same time and have the screen split in two with various sizes and positions available. In order to use multiple sources the first source has to be a Display Port connection while the other can be DVI, HDMI or HDMI(MHL).

This is not to be confused with the computer program Screen Split that will automatically position pages of programs or browsers according to two, three or four quadrants in various positions. With both multiple sources on the same screen and being able to quickly position programs and browser pages automatically you have some excellent features for the UltraWide monitor.

The HDMI MHL allows you to connect a Smart Phone or Tablet using the HDMI connection that will also feed power to the tablet or phone as well as allow audio over the connection. While not a major feature it is one more that is nice to have when you want it just like the USB connection and the features that allow.

The LG UltraWide monitors come with a few programs to help with use and color calibration is a concern for some but you do need a color calibration device if you want to check and adjust color. The color calibration is for photographers and videographers and other professionals who need to make sure their monitors are accurate for color.

1920 Versus 2560 Field of View

I do not have a calibration device but will include a screen shot of the program to show what you would be working with for color calibration with an LG monitor. Colors are pretty accurate right out of the box just by comparing the colors with a purchased color chart.

For any kind of professional work like photo editing or video editing you should purchase a calibration device and be familiar with its use on a regular basis. Colors do look good and the screen has plenty of adjustments on the menus with things like sharpness, contrast and color adjustments available.

Gaming is where a wider screen can lead to some winning moments in entertainment so for gamers an UltraWide screen may be a dream purchase. Some games like Battlefield 3 offer a bit more to see when changing screen sizes so you get a bit more field of view on an UltraWide monitor to enhance your gaming prowess.

I checked out field of view for Battlefield 3 and for the newly released Call of Duty: Ghosts and was a bit surprised to find that Call of Duty: Ghosts is locked for field of view at 65 degrees. This means the wider screen size only allows for a nice sized screen and not an actual wider view in games.

Split Screen w/ Tablet

A wider view in game makes for more peripheral vision and for first person shooters this means less of a chance for someone to sneak up on you. I have spotted people trying to sneak past in games like Battlefield 3 Metro map where you can sneak by on the other side of trains.

This wider peripheral vision means a better score and every little bit helps in gaming but just a nice sized screen looks good in gaming as well as movies. I enjoy having a good sized screen in gaming and entertainment like movies and television so I can enjoy the shows and games on a larger screen.

I tested frame rates in Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Dirt 3 and was pleased to find my 3 GHz tri-core gaming system with a new AMD HD 7950 graphics card was more than adequate for widescreen gaming. I was getting 60 to 80 frames per second in Battlefield 3 with high quality settings which were the default chosen by the game.

When maxed out for Call of Duty: Ghosts at top quality it did drop lower with some stuttering moments so I did have to lower quality to just a tad lower than the extra quality that Ghosts calls their best. Even the newest game Call of Duty: Ghosts did have more than playable frame rates on the 2560 by 1080 monitor at high settings but not at the highest with the HD7950 graphics card.

The better screen also means more accurate colors and for movies and games this helps with the enjoyment of the film and games that much more. Accurate colors, better response time and all the features you could want like USB 3.0 connections and an audio pass through means you can setup the monitor for business or home work as well as entertainment and enjoy all of it.

The LG UltraWide 29 inch monitor model 29EB73-P is a fantastic monitor for business and professional use as well as gaming and home entertainment. I highly recommend the LG UltraWide 29 inch monitor for a full sized monitor that looks great and has plenty of features for professionals and home users.

Pros
Widescreen for two full sized program or browser pages
Multiple inputs and Dual Screen from two sources
2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 connections

Cons
Not a budget monitor at about $550
7 Watt speaker is not top quality but alright

  1. I am currently using a Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 which is about the minimum for medium detail gaming on Battlefield 4 at 2560 x 1440 resolution. If I Push the detail to high or ultra the game starts to lag noticeably and gets choppy so the $200 range for gaming level graphics cards would be about the lowest you would want to go. If your just using the LG 27 or 29 inch for general computer use or for web surfing you could use just about any current generation graphics card as most support higher resolutions just not for higher detail gaming.

Before purchasing a new graphics card you should make sure it does go up to the 2560 x 1440 resolution if that is your goal in monitor desktop resolution.

      1. Native resolution should be part of the graphics card you use or the embedded graphics if your using a cpu/gpu processor. It is usually a part of the graphics adapter software you use, AMD or Radeon is the two most common graphics systems with both having drivers for monitors. Windows Xp, 7 and 8 come with drivers and will automatically load or download drivers for your system that will run the monitor. MAC should also do the same or have them built in the operating system from what I understand but I am not sure as I do not do anything with any Apple products.

If your looking to use an LG IPS monitor for a business it should work with pretty much any computer.

  2. For example, I’m considering to buy an asus motherboard P8Q67-MDO-B3. I see on their site these graphic specs.
    – Supports DVI with max. resolution 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
    – Supports RGB with max. resolution 2048 x 1536 @ 75 Hz
    – Supports DisplayPort with max. resolution 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz

If I get it good, I will have to use display port to be able to get the native resolution of the screen, but this lg screen does not have display port.

        1. On the 27 inch IPS Monitor it is, the 29 inch did not come with one. If you need a cable for anything computer related I would recommend Monoprice for everything like that, cheap prices good quality and well worth the wait.

  3. thanks for all your answers.
a last question and I’ll leave you alone.
I might buy the asus ASUS Z77-A which has no displayport but HDMI.
    here are the specs.
    Integrated Graphics Processor
    Multi-VGA output support : HDMI/DVI/RGB ports
    – Supports HDMI with max. resolution 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
    – Supports DVI with max. resolution 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
    – Supports RGB with max. resolution 2048 x 1536 @ 75 Hz
Maximum shared memory of 1696 MB

It looks that I won’t be able to use HDMI to get the native resolution.
will it work with that motherboard?

    1. With the Asus Z77-a it does not look like oyu would be able to get the 2560×1440 resolution with the integrated graphics, you would need to purchase a separate graphics card. The Z77-A only goes up to 2048×1536 with the VGA/RGB connection. With both those motherboards you could easily get a decent graphics card that would allow either displayport or dvi as long as the graphics card supports dual link dvi. If you are looking into a graphics crad along with that I could help you with a recommendation there as well.
