Falling Skies Season 2 DVD Review

Noah Wiley stars as Tom Mason with three sons who are struggling to survive in the aftermath of an alien invasion that killed 90 percent of the world’s population. Tom is second in command of the 2nd Massachusetts Militia who are fighting to survive and protect civilians.

When the aliens invade they bring with them captives who wear an alien device called a harness that controls and communicates between the wearer and the alien Overlords. Children on earth are being taken hostage and have this harness which is a biomedical device that turns the children into obedient slaves.

At first the humans only see the six legged skitters and think they are the invaders but at the end of season 1 we are introduced to the Overlords. In Season 2 of Falling Skies Tom returns after 3 months of questioning and torture from an alien overlord to rejoin the 2nd Massachusetts.

Tom left with the alien to protect his son Ben because Ben is communicating with a skitter that is rebelling against the Overlords. Tom’s son still has some problems with the leftover parts of the alien device that remain in his spine and the aliens can partially control them.

Tom struggles to remain a leader and to help others but when the group finally finds a larger group of survivors their hope is renewed. The group that the 2nd Massachusetts find is not by any means self-sufficient and in serious need of help in many areas but it is someone else.

The series is pretty good with a lower focus on the science fiction and alien aspects and more on human frailties, emotions and behavior. The show does a great job of dealing with the surviving members of humanity and how some still believe they can return to a normal life by defeating the aliens.

Of course you always get a differing opinion and some work to help the aliens in the belief that a truce can be obtained if they give the aliens what they want. Noah Wiley does a great job as a history professor who knows a lot about leadership and war from books and study.

He uses a lot of his background knowledge not to fight the aliens but to predict what and how they should go about surviving even when they cannot know everything about the invaders. Falling Skies does a very good job of keeping interest and curiosity as to where the series is going with really good special effects.

Falling Skies is good enough in my opinion that after watching a few episodes of the season 2 edition I received for review I had to go out and buy the first season. While you can understand what is going on with the handy recap video on TNT the first season is well worth a purchase along with the second season.

Falling Skies is a great series and one that I hope keeps enough differing story and plot to keep audience members glued to their screens for a few more seasons. Video for Falling Skies is pretty good and special effects are mostly makeup and actual creatures instead of animation for the aliens.

Audio is also great but not perfect with some well-done surround sound and very clear voice from the Dolby TrueHD sound track. While the audio is not the best possible sound track the Dolby TrueHD is great and without any serious problems.

Bonus features include plenty of making of features, audio commentary and behind the scenes footage that gives a great look at creating the world of Falling Skies. The bonus content has plenty of making of and behind the scenes that really give you an idea of how they create the shows and work together to create their series.

The series on Blu-ray is more than enjoyable and well worth a look for a fun and interesting science fiction show that has action and adventure. I enjoy a good science fiction story and Falling Skies has a good plot with good acting which is a main point of why the series has a good following.

Falling Skies Season 2 on Blu-ray is a great way to catch up on the struggle for the 2nd Massachusetts to survive in the aftermath of the alien invasion.
