Strike Fighters 2

ThirdWire brings a favorite of many in the combat flight simulator genre back for an updated run at Windows Vista that brings all the best from the first project of the company. ThirdWire has been in the flight sim game for a while and they have released their first project of Strike Fighters in a newly updated version with Windows Vista compliant installation packaging.

The first project of ThirdWire was Strike Fighters but this game came out quite a while ago in terms of video games, way back in 2002. Now they have updated the game for Windows Vista installation as well as incorporated all the fixes and updates for a fun flight sim combat game that is Vista compatible.

Having not played the first Strike Fighters does give me an advantage of having no preconceptions about the Vista version but I have played the Wings Over Israel recently which is quite similar to this game. Strike Fighters is a combat flight sim game with plenty of flying and realistic combat action in the cockpit of some of the top jet aircraft of the 1960’s and 70’s.

Cockpit View

While the games graphics for ground objects and terrain do lack a certain panache, oh heck, they are as basic as you can get, the aircraft and ground vehicles look great. Physics is about as good as you get but there is a really good quality in these games that gives you a great idea of just what pilots had to contend with before the introduction of flight avionics and computers for bombing.

Cockpit Interior

Today we have all those lovely computers that basically tell pilots when to push the button to drop a bomb or even line up the bombing run for you as well as having weapons that will guide themselves to targets. Back in the 1960’s through the 1970’s pilots had to do a lot of seat of your pants bombing by calculating airplane speed, height and other factors to drop bombs at the correct distance to target to ensure a hit.
