IGOR

IGOR is not your typical evil scientist sidekick, he wants to invent on his own and show that not all Igor’s are made alike. Igor’s are the faithful and obedient sidekicks of all evil scientists in Malaria, that cloud covered village that all mad scientists call home.

Years ago a cloud covered Malaria and the crops died so King Malbert, voiced by Jay Leno, created a system where scientists would bribe the world to not unleash their terrifying inventions on the world. This worked so well that each year a contest is held called the science fair to pick the top science project to bribe the world.

Maybe not the best plan but it works for Malaria and the mad scientist types that live there with their faithful if somewhat simple minded sidekick Igors. The Igor’s are not all alike though, IGOR voiced by John Cusack wants to invent on his own and has done so twice almost successfully. He has resurrected a rabbit named Scamper, voiced by Steve Buscemi, and made it indestructible and  transplanted a brain into a robot with the nickname Brian, voiced by Sean Hayes.

While both of these inventions actually turned out well IGOR wants to create real life and gets his chance when his mad scientist owner Doctor Glickenstein voiced by John Cleese kills himself. IGOR does his best to create a living giant, Eva voiced by Molly Shannon, but when she mishears IGOR telling her what she is she thinks her name is Eva while IGOR was trying to tell her she was evil.

IGOR tries his best to make her evil by getting her a brain washing but the brain washing doesn’t take when Brian who also sprung for a brain scrub messed up his remote by dropping it into the tub and tries to use Eva’s. In Eva’s brain washing car the remote changes her TV channel to a documentary of a kind hearted Hollywood actress instead of the evil shows the brain washing was supposed to be tuned to.

With the upcoming yearly contest to find the top evil scientist in Malaria IGOR tries his best to turn Eva into an evil creature but only encourages her to be better at acting. King Malbert’s main rival Doctor Schadenfreude voiced by Eddie Izzard wants to take over ruling Malaria by stealing the other scientists experiments and claiming them for his own.

IGOR has told Eva that she will be performing at the science fair and wants to show off his invention to the other scientists but claiming it is his master’s invention. IGOR thinks that if they see his invention and later find out he created it that the scientists will accept him as an equal.

Doctor Schadenfreude uncovers this plot and exposes IGOR to the king and the King throws IGOR into the disposal and takes Eva to transform her into evil by committing an act of violence, thus enabling her evil side. Scamper and Brain rescue IGOR and then rescue Eva from Doctor Schadenfreude only to discover that the cloud that covers Malaria was an invention of King Malberts.

IGOR rushes to the arena where Eva and the other inventions are fighting each other and IGOR persuades Eva that even though she has the potential for evil she can be good if she wants. Eva and IGOR free the other Igor’s and Scamper and Brain turn off the cloud machine to free the country from the evil reign that has ruled it for years.

Doctor Schadenfreude takes the thrown from King Malbert after Scamper and Brain dropped the cloud making machine on the king killing him. IGOR and Eva end up showing what a fraud Doctor Schadenfreude is in front of everyone and his plot to take over the throne by stealing inventions from the other scientists.

IGOR is a fun take on the mad scientist and his faithful sidekick Igor and does a great job of throwing a wrench into the monster movie genre. The CGI animation film does a great job of telling a tale in a new and funny way keeping you entertained throughout with its comedy and plot twists.

IGOR shows that even though he created two successful experiments he will never be satisfied until he gets recognition for his achievements which he tires with creating life. Even though he does create life he finds that he does not really care about the recognition when it comes from others who are just trying to abuse the power they gain from it.

The Blu-ray edition comes with the usual commentary by director Tony Leondis, writer Chris McKenna and Producer Max Howard as well as a few other features. You get an alternate opening scene and a concept art gallery including characters, set and production designs, storyboards and posters. The alternate opening scene and galleries are kind of fun but the Blu-ray edition does not really have all that much bonus content to make it worthwhile.

IGOR is a fun movie and a very witty and different take on the generic monster movie and well made with plenty fo star actors lending their talented voice to the film. The Blu-ray edition may not have all the extras you could want but the movie is a fun take on monster movies and well worth the cost for the at least the DVD version.
