The Terminator

It just does not get any better than this, even with an older film turned to Blu-ray this is film making at its finest. James Cameron puts the pieces together for a cinematic great and the movie is still as current and spellbinding as well as an important piece of film history.

James Cameron starts his best film with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and Linda Hamilton as his prey Sarah Connor. When the war against the humans is going badly for the machines a Terminator is sent back in time to kill Sarah, the mother of the leader of the human resistance in the future.

Kyle Reese played by Michael Biehn is also sent back to the past by Sarah’s son John Connor to protect Sarah and ensure John lives to help the humans of the future fight off the machines. The movie has a plot that is futuristic but just right for a science fiction movie of the time with actually a less noticeable science fiction style.

While the Terminator tries to find and then kill Sarah Kyle must try to stay out of the hands of the police and help Sarah stay one step ahead of her robot assassin. Sarah ends up finishing off the Terminator in a factory of robotic equipment, irony noted, and shows how she can be tough when needed.

While the movie did use a bit of cheesy animation and stop motion photography for the most part the movie is all actors and well done makeup effects. You can tell a film is a classic when lines from the movie are still used and overused in both culture and more films.

The Terminator started a series, more films and even video games and graphics novels, yes comic books to us older folks. A funny quote from Wikipedia is the Terminator franchise has had a measurable impact on our culture and you can certainly see it from time to time.

The Terminator is a great film and very entertaining, a definite must for any movie collection with great audio and video as good as you’re going to get from a 1980’s movie. Video is grainy throughout, black levels are lacking and the overall quality is just not there for a Blu-ray but the film is still enjoyable with all its inherent problems.

I have read at other sites and have to agree that this film will probably never be any better than this edition or the other Blu-ray releases that have come out for video quality. Audio is in PCM 5.1 uncompressed which is slightly better in terms of quality over Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and somewhat noticeable in this film.

The uncompressed version is better because it is not altered and compressed for a bit better quality over the more common Dolby Digital 5.1. The sounds and background noises are almost spot on from the night club scene where the Terminator first tries to take out Sarah to the cacophony of the final battle in the factory.

Bonus features for the Limited Edition Book release of The Terminator includes a booklet with the Blu-ray disc copy of the film that includes information about James Cameron and cast. The bonus features on the Blu-ray disc include a retrospective look by James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger, a making of feature and deleted scenes that are the same features from the other Blu-ray release.

In all I would have to say that this edition with the bonus book as part of the case is the same as the other Blu-ray release only with the 24 page booklet attached. If you have another Blu-ray release of The Terminator this edition does not add anything you don’t already have but if not then what are you waiting for.

The Terminator is still a great film and many of the suspenseful parts hold up much better than newer films due to the great direction and cast work. The Terminator is a definite must for a movie collection, it started the smart female hero roles in film history as well as several other film staples and a few one liners that still work today.
