Dexter Season 2

Dexter comes from a broken family, he has issues and works for the Miami police department in blood spatter forensics which is saying so little about him. He was irrevocably changed in his youth when his drug addict informant mother was butchered by three men in front of Dex and his brother.

As a quick recap season 1 of Dexter had the Miami Police circling his secret closely while they tried to capture a serial killer dubbed the Ice Truck Killer. Turns out Dexter’s brother is the killer and while the police were quite close to him Dexter ends up killing him and staging it as a suicide.

To say Dexter has issues is a bit of an understatement, he is a repeat serial killer but he only kills other serial killers and murderers. He has only killed those who are the lowest of low and who have always gotten away with their crimes or Dexter arranged their freedom so he could take care of things.

Dexter was taught by his adoptive father to keep a low profile and always follow the code of who to kill and how to go about it. His adoptive father knew what had happened to Dexter as he was the officer working with his informant mother and had been sleeping wither as well.

Harry, Dexter’s father, saw what Dexter was becoming and wanted to give him a chance in life so he taught Dexter to channel his “addiction” of killing and kill only those that deserve it. Dexter is running from his past and in Season 2 must go from behind the scenes forensics investigator to in the news serial killer hiding in plain sight.

Dexter’s dumping grounds for years has been discovered by divers and now the police along with the FBI are close on his heels. The investigation is led by newcomer to Dexter FBI investigator Frank Lundy played by Keith Carradine but Dexter is right in the middle to throw wrenches into the works.

Dexter also meets another newcomer to the show in his addiction sponsor Lila played by Jaime Murray after Dexter uses addiction to drugs to help cover his odd behavior. A fellow officer who has always been suspicious of Dexter is also close on his heels during the season as he takes things a bit too far by tailing Dexter in his off hours.

The FBI gets closer to Dexter, figuring out that whoever is responsible for the murders is a law enforcement agent from the Miami Police Department so Dexter must throw them off the trail. Taking care of one of the killers responsible for his mother’s murder while the investigation is hot on his heels Dexter has never felt this close to being caught.

Dexter is one of those interesting shows that takes a subject that is so distasteful and turns it into a spectical where you root for the star because he does have morals. Morals of a kind that are not exactly main stream but you can root for him all the same as he does have standards of only killing those that really deserve it.

Serial killers, murderers who get away with their crimes and ones who have never been caught except by someone who knows all about murder are his subjects, not really victims. Dexter has the most unique opening credits scene I have ever seen that screams murder and bodies but is every day ordinary morning rituals of eating breakfast, shaving and getting dressed.

The show runs through 12 episodes of the second season and includes extras to enhance this nightmarish series that is extremely entertaining. The show takes a deep look at serial killing with plenty of blood, after all Dexter is a blood splatter analyst but not much gore.

Season 2 of Dexter shows off all the usual happenings and actor comfort that occurs when a show is picked up for another season and the actors are getting comfortable in their roles. Dexter season 2 has all this and the usual great writing that really does keep you on the edge of your seat.

I really enjoy watching a show after it takes off and the actors as well as everyone else on the show really works at furthering the story and delving deeper into the characters. Well seasoned and excellent entertainment in a drama is one way to describe Dexter Season 2 but outstanding is one that fits well enough.

Dexter Season 2 is great; I actually had to purchase Season 1 so I could figure out what has gone before just to watch this season which was well worth it. Season 2 brings everything to a head with great intense drama and edge of your seat anticipation, I can’t wait for Season 3.

The Blu-ray edition of Dexter Season 2 has the 12 episodes on three Blu-ray discs as well as some fair extras for Dexter and other Showtime hits. The bonus features available through the BD Live feature include two episodes of The United States of Tara, several interview and extra clips and a bonus on the disc is the interactive feature Tools of the Trade.

The extras are twofold, the Tools of the Trade feature is a rather short game putting various tools in the rollup pouch that such devices are stored in. The other extras are brought to you using the BD Live feature which requires an internet connection so if you don’t have this you’re out of luck.

The BD Live features are a series of podcasts, the Dark Defender shorts and interviews from the cast and crew of the series that amounts to some extras. But with the lack of on disc specials this may be a lack of bonus content totally for anyone not using an internet connected Blu-ray player.

The series is great, fantastic, awesome, okay you get the idea but the extras are actually almost nonexistent as far as I am concerned. I do have internet connected Blu-ray through my PS3 but I really think these are features that should have been included on another disc, even a standard definition DVD.

The Dexter Season 2 in high definition is however well worth the cost in its great video and audio presentation, especially the close-up shots with such vivid detail. Not the gory detail you may be imagining from a show about a serial killer vigilante but the detail of close-up video work to create vivid imagery that is stark in contrast to what you would expect.

The killing scenes and other body part shots do show off some gore but more blood than anything as well as great action sequences here and there. The show is not all guts and gore but more a drama dealing with a possibly gory subject handled just right.

This type of filming can be seen in the opening credits to any particular season 1 or season 2 show with the shots that look so much like a killer prepping or carrying out his work but is actually Dex getting ready for the day. Dexter Season 2 is definitely worth the cost of Blu-ray just for the show itself, Season 1 is also available and a definite must have to view the continuing adventures of Dexter.
