Jeff Dunham Minding the Monsters

For two years in a row Jeff Dunham tops the lists for richest comedian and his recent release of Minding the Monsters continues the hits for Mr. Dunham. Minding the Monsters is Jeff Dunham’s fifth standup routine that is now out on DVD and Blu-ray and his second holiday special.

His other hits include Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself, Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity, Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special and Jeff Dunham: Controlled Chaos. Jeff and his friends the puppets have been guests on several TV series, talk shows and even a role in a feature film.

Minding the Monsters brings back the main puppets Jeff is famous for with Peanut, Achmed, Walter and Jose Jalapeno on a Stick along with favorites Bubba J and his newest Little Jeff. Jeff Dunham does his usual routine by introducing himself and going through a standup routine alone then trotting out his puppets one by one.

In the end of the routine he has Peanut and Jose along with Little Jeff for a four way conversation with himself that is truly hilarious. Watching his routines throughout the various standup releases in the past has at times left me in tears and this one is no different.

I continue to view the routines over again and find his style of comedy definitely hilarious even if he does get a bit racy and controversial. Jeff uses jokes poked at the worst “politically correct” topics using his dummies in a way that points a finger at some of the silly ideas behind the racism and similar topics.

Jeff uses his puppets to great effect to show how many have taken political correctness to the extreme in such a way that invites audiences to see that they are just nonsense in a politically correct wrapper. One quote that really stood out to me when researching this review is from an article that was in the New York Times recently talking about Jeff being exhausted with political correctness.

This was not a quote of his but it sounds much like my own opinion with racism and the politically correct way of talking and acting in public. It seems to me that Jeff uses his puppets to show how much we are so scared of being politically correct and how overboard it has become.

I found several recent examples that many have gone too far and I think Jeff also feels this way like changing Santa tales because he smokes a pipe or has a fur trimmed suit. Sometimes we need someone to say outright and in public that things have gone too far and we can say things the way they are without fear of retaliation.

Jeff Dunham uses his humor to show us that things may have gotten out of hand with political correctness and that we can say what we feel because we have the freedom of speech. He just uses it to make us laugh and you can be sure that his recent release is the perfect way to make people laugh and it does come out in time for the October holiday.

Halloween is the perfect time to release a Comedy Central special concentrating on monsters and Jeff has used the graves of past dummies and a beautiful set in the introduction to highlight the theme. Minding the Monsters is on Blu-ray and standard DVD with the Blu-ray edition having excellent video and audio but with only a certain amount of quality due to the very nature of a standup routine.

Quality for audio and video is very good but without any variety to the set or sound you have no real comparison for quality other than the great looking on stage view. The sound is clear and crisp but there really is little use of surround sound as you would expect from the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound track.

Bonus content is from a ventriloquist who has been documenting by video his setup, creating his dummies and how technology has helped him in various aspects. Several making of features include 3D printing and props of his newest special, computer work to create his props and a look at the set from behind the scenes.

Jeff has done a special on ventriloquism and has taken to videotaping a lot of aspects of his routine including making his dummies using computers and modern printing methods. Using the Halloween theme of the special Jeff has introduced each of his characters in costume and shows the creation with the making of features.

While Jeff does not break from routine his standup comedy does keep the heart at ease with humor and laughter does prove to be easy with his type of comedy. I highly recommend a look at Jeff Dunham and his latest Minding the Monsters release continues the fantastic comedy and ventriloquist act of Jeff Dunham.
