The Bourne Legacy follows a side trip in the Bourne story with another agent trying to get off the super soldier drugs only to find out he is partly rid of them due to a virus but this Bourne outing is too much story and not enough action.

The Bourne Legacy

Using the Jason Bourne storyline The Bourne Legacy takes a side trip parallel to the plot of the last Jason Bourne film and happening while Jason is finally getting his answers. Aaron Cross played by Jeremy Renner is the next in line of government created super soldiers who seems to be trying to end his dependency on the government supplied drugs.

With a host of government agents after him he must stay one step ahead and fight harder in order to survive but he also needs help from one of the scientists who are making the drugs he is on. The Bourne Legacy takes a side step from the traditional full out action of the Bourne series with a slow march up to the action explaining first what is going on.

The Bourne Legacy occurs during the last Bourne film but in other parts of the world with a few clips and events from the last film explaining why the super soldier spy program needs to be erased. The film takes its sweet time which is a big surprise from the other Bourne films and just disappoints with much less of the familiar Bourne action.

That nonstop tough as nails fighting and ridiculously impossible action is what the series is known for and this film just does not live up to the Bourne series. The Bourne Legacy is not on the same level as the previous films but it is a decent enough action film and Jeremy Renner does a great job as the next Jason Bourne.

The Blu-ray edition looks great and sounds fantastic with clear video that is only marred by a lack of deep blacks and has a few muted colors at times. The Blu-ray transfer is great but one disappointment is the film goes back and forth between new scenes from this movie and a few scenes from The Bourne Ultimatum.

Audio is also fantastic with clear voice and very well used surround during the whole film for a really immersive experience as far as sound. Ambient sounds and those exciting scenes are all well done with great use of the sound field that really makes the film that much more entertaining.

Bonus content on the Blu-ray edition includes audio commentary, deleted scenes and making of features which are under an hour to take a peek behind the scenes. The bonus content is rather flat but there is enough to at least get a glimpse into the process and see why they attempted another Bourne film with a new star.

I was disappointed with The Bourne Legacy mostly due to the basic motivation behind the star and why he was going off program according to the plot. We never really know why Aaron Cross is fighting his training and the program other than a thin story of being a different man than he was but this does follow along with Jason Bourne I suppose.

He does what he is supposed to but veers from the course set before him for no apparent reason and we never really get the full story on this. The Bourne Legacy is a good enough action film and worth a watch but for fans of the Bourne series it will probably disappoint.
