Sam and Dean Winchester are not your average adults raised by the all American family, their father and mother were killed by demons. They were raised to not just fear the evil that walks the earth but to fight back with all the weapons at their disposal.
Season 4 begins with Dean returning to the land of the living after his time in Hell; Dean was killed at the end of Season 3 and spends four months in Hell. An Angel, Castiel played by Misha Collins, rescues Dean from Hell and his brother Sam is more than happy to see him return.
After the initial apprehensions of finding Dean back among the living Sam accepts him and they continue their fight against not only recurring characters but some single episode ones. The fight with Lilith continues through the season but help comes not only in the form of Ruby, a demon and Bobby, the Winchester’s friend and fellow hunter but with Angels and others.
Supernatural is much like another series I enjoyed a lot, The X-Files, at least until they went the conspiracy theory way a bit too much. I enjoy shows that have a larger theme but with each episode mostly a self contained story and the viewer not needing much prerequisite viewing.
The show does have enough back story that pops in every episode so you do get caught up with the previous seasons where needed and not in a way that is annoying. In several episodes they talk about their families and friends, hunters and Dean going to Hell but enough is happening in the current episode as well that it’s exiting and enjoyable without being obscure.
I was able to watch season 4 without knowing what had happened before other than the main storyline and still enjoy it as well as understand. The season walks you through the entire previous seasons one bit at a time but not in a confusing way.
I enjoyed the show because the first several episodes of season 4 were all self-contained except for a few informative bits here and there to give you some of the storyline. Once you understand the main theme they inject the storyline of Dean and Sam along with Castiel and others fighting to stop demons from opening the seals to release Lucifer.
The Blu-ray edition of Supernatural Season 4 contains the 22 episodes in great high definition audio and video with a couple of good bonus features. The video is great and contains enough well done special effects that look really good for a great but not too gory monster fight show.
The video is well done and has no problems with grain, color or flesh tones with a special emphasis on grisly and gory details. While the show does have guts and gore they keep the really gruesome stuff to a minimum but show a lot of blood.
The video looks very good with great color and the dark and shadows look especially good like you would expect for a thriller drama dealing in the supernatural and demons. The video is great but audio is not up to the maximum you could expect from Blu-ray with only Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and not DTS-HD Master Audio.
The audio does sound great with clear conversations and voice in the center and very good surround sound with rear speakers. The audio sounds great even on less than the maximum you can get from Blu-ray so even though they only used the 5.1 Dolby you get enough to enjoy the show.
Bonus features on the Season 4 Blu-ray edition included commentary on a few of the shows from various people including writers of episodes, executive producer Eric Kripke and Director Robert Singer. Other additions include extended and deleted scenes if you care for those and a gag reel as well as a set of features detailing various mythologies behind the show.
The mythology features called, of course, The Mythologies of Supernatural is a look at things like angels and miracles, purgatory and hell from various people in the series and others like professors of theology and religious specialists. The feature is well worth a look and shows how the beliefs behind our largest religion ties into the show and how the series looks at the religious aspects that are such a vital part of the storyline.
The other commentary features that are on some of the episodes are alright but nothing to write home about and the gag reel is a quick bit of fun. The extras and bonus features mainly consist of the commentaries and the Mythologies feature which make a pretty decent bonus set.
Supernatural Season 4 is a great show and I truly cannot wait till season 5 hits Blu-ray for my review copy as the show really is enjoyable. Check out Supernatural Season 4 on Blu-ray and don’t worry if you haven’t seen previous seasons, you won’t be disappointed.
