Lloyd Dobler is the perfect gentleman even though he is just a high school graduate and doesn’t really know what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Along with trying to decide if he should join the military as his father wants he has the usual options of college or finding a more immediate job.
He just can’t decide but he does know that he is smitten with Diane Court even though she is leaving at the end of the summer for a fellowship in England. Diane is the class valedictorian who did not have time for a social life in school being too busy with her school work.
She wins a fellowship in England and at the end of the summer will go on her first airplane trip overseas to continue her education. Lloyd makes an impression on her with his cool calm manners and his responsible behavior and eventually they fast friends and lovers.
Lloyd does not make a favorable impression with Diane’s father who only wants the best for his daughter even though he does not follow a straight path himself. When her own father lets her down Diane makes up her own mind to follow her own dreams on her own terms.
Say Anything is an older movie that really hit the theatres with a bang and a good reception with very positive reviews and the film does age well. It still shines as a funny and good romantic comedy that has a real message and heart with well done acting and direction from Cameron Crowe in his first film.
While the film is a bit slow to get started the message that being popular does not always go hand in hand with working hard to achieve the things you want even in high school. Diane is shown as a hard working girl who sacrifices her social status and any chance she has at being well known at school by going to off campus classes.
She discovers that having fun and being popular can be part of her life and that hard work at something she wants can happen along with things like a social life. She falls for Lloyd and they end up going off together with Lloyd being the perfect gentleman to the end.
Say Anything is a good movie and brings a fresh look at the social and romantic side of young adults and the end of high school. The film does have that good message and is well worth watching even if you don’t watch the film over and over again.
The Blu-ray edition of Say Anything is a very good Blu-ray transfer from standard definition with good color and no problems. The video has well done everything with good black levels that allow you to see shadows and even grain is apparent but low key to enhance the film.
The audio is also equally well done with the usual surround sound that is a bit lower key due to the calmer nature of the film with a few instances of noticeable surround sound. The music in the film sounds great and there are some classics from the 80’s there to enjoy with the audio in DTS-HD Master Audio.
The Blu-ray edition contains commentary from director Cameron Crowe, John Cusack and Ione Skye that is actually twenty minutes longer than the film. Other additions include deleted, alternate and extended scenes but the main addition is the various commentary tracks.
Say Anything is a great film and even though it is dated it does make a good statement that love is powerful and hard work can go hand in hand with having fun. Say Anything is a fun and well made movie that is worth talking a look at and the Blu-ray edition does contain enough extras to check it out over the original.
