Ashley Judd plays attorney Claire Kubik who has her life turned upside down when her new husband is arrested for high crimes by the FBI. Tom Kubik has changed his name from Ron Chapman after he deserted from the military when he was involved in an incident in El Salvador.
Ron/Tom was in an elite military unit when they were dispatched to settle a terrorist bombing of three students in EL Salvador. Tom is arrested when his fingerprints point out his sorted past when the couple has a break in and police respond to their home and check for prints.
Claire needs to step up her game and defend her husband but due to the military trying his case she seeks outside help from small time attorney Charlie Grimes played by Morgan Freeman. Charlie was in the military and now lives on the riffraff surrounding the base and their small time encounters with the police and military legal system.
When a soldier in Tom’s unit went berserk and killed civilians while in a village in El Salvador they blame Tom and he deserts so he does not have to face the consequences. The trial moves forward with plenty of twists and turns and the hugest one of all near the end but the movie has plenty of action and drama in between the big surprises.
Morgan Freeman is great as the small time attorney thrust into the middle of the big time military trial with a grudge against the military system due to his past. They have big obstacles to overcome including a high ranking officer who was the small military units commander at the time of the incident.
High Crimes is a pretty good film but lacks a reason to attract your interest other than great acting, something is missing in the story. The story is lacking a compelling reason to continue to care about the fate of Tom/Ron even when you are given clues throughout the film.
High Crimes looks and sounds very good with exceptional audio and video quality throughout with video that highlights the grainy flash backs. The films transfer is really nice and the clarity of modern scenes only highlights the flashbacks with their grainy look and rushed filming look.
The video looks very good with nice colors, good flesh tones and well done shadows as well as good flesh tones for a great video presentation. The audio is also up to well done Blu-ray standards with good positional surround sound, so good I thought my phone was ringing in one scene.
The audio is in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround Sound and works very well for position and with clear conversations and voice in the front. The surround is great with those occasional left and right sounds to keep you thinking you’re in the action for a well done audio.
The extras in the Blu-ray edition are small and quick but have a great ring to the film including audio commentary by director Carl Franklin and six making of features. The making of features highlight some good parts of the film but only run for about 30 minutes for some additional entertainment.
High crimes is a good film and with Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd you are sure to not be disappointed in their performances and the film does excite and entertain for the most part. The Blu-ray edition of High Crimes does lack many extra features but it is a good film and worth a look and the Blu-ray edition does have the great quality.
