Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur

Sid the Sloth has done it again, messed with things he should have left alone so the herd is once again forced to fix things before they get out of hand. Manny voiced by Ray Romano with his new girl Ellie voiced by Queen Latifah and Diego voiced by Denis Leary must fix the problem that Sid voiced by John Leguizamo has brought to them.

Sid in his usual bumbling way wants to find a family as Manny and Ellie are expecting and others of the herd have children and are happy. Diego is looking to leave but before he can Sid finds himself again in trouble by finding some eggs in a glacier that he undertakes to hatch and create his own family.

Manny and Diego insist he take the eggs back but before he can they hatch and are not the familiar ice age mammals but are in fact dinosaurs. The adventure begins as Manny, a very pregnant Ellie and the rest trudge to the glacier and underneath to a new world of dinosaurs to find the mother of the three tyrannosaurus babies.

Sid becomes the father figure of the babies in the eyes of the mother as he returns the babies even though he doesn’t want to and the herd unites with the mother to defeat an even larger foe. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’ may bring a new world and story to the series but the story and action is a bit mediocre even with a boost from new characters.

The addition of Buck, a weasel voiced by Simon Peg, does not do enough to save the show or make it more endearing to adults but the Ice Age appeal to kids is still there. Dawn of the Dinosaur is great animation but the story and direction leaves much to be desired to make a film that is technically great but lacking in entertainment.

Dawn of the Dinosaur is a good film and the Blu-ray edition has some great video in high definition with very well done computer animation. The film has a depth and feel of the outdoors and everything looks fantastic for an animation with outstanding color and shadow.

You get a real feel for the 3 dimensional scenery and everything does have a great depth and everything for the video is well done.  The film really looks great and is a testament to what animators can do with a computer generated film.

The audio is lacking in the full surround sound but does have very well done bass with really good sounding impact from most low frequency effects like footsteps of those large beasts. Other sounds are well done but directionality from surround sound is lacking for the sides and rear while voice, music and other front heavy audio is fine.

Technically Dawn of the Dinosaur is a great film and really outstanding for video with a little shortcoming on the surround but well done despite. The story is just a bit short of imagination or appeal but kids should love the latest addition to a favorite adventure film.

The Blu-ray edition contains plenty of bonus content for both adults and kids with audio commentary, several making of features and those great short clips of Scrat. The bonus content is great even though some of it may take an adults help for kids to enjoy for the storybook creation.

Dawn of the Dinosaur is a full adventure even though the story or direction may have been lacking during the film making process. Regardless of this fans of the other films will be sure to want to check this out even if it’s only a rental but the Blu-ray edition does have plenty of extras.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur on Blu-ray is very full of extras and well worth a purchase for all the fun it will bring to viewers of all ages.
