Tom Hansen, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt falls for Summer Finn played by Zooey Deschanel but she does not believe in love after her parents broke up when she was young. The movie warns in the very beginning that it is not your typical love story and it truly is not with its fated love you can see coming.
(500)Days of Summer is not your typical romantic comedy but does come off as that in many ways with the boy falling in love and finally getting the girl and then losing her. When he doesn’t want to get over her he does the typical things guys who have fallen hard for girls does, pines about her and sees her everywhere at first.
The film is a bit disjointed as it jumps all around the (500)Days of Summer and you get glimpses at their happy and sad times throughout. Some of the hard things to understand and come to grips with is her dislike for a serious relationship but by the end you do have some kind of idea for her reasons.
There are complete opposites to the film like the sappy advice giving younger sister and the jubilant day after their first night together that is funny. Tom does end up if not starting then at least instigating the inevitable end of their relationship when he wants more than just friendship.
Summer does not believe in commitment and when Tom questions her about it and wanting to know that someday she may feel differently she says she can’t believe in love. This is of course the problem but Tom is looking toward the future and wanting to either find that perfect someone or at least have something to look forward to.
In the end (500)Days of Summer turns out to be a realistic look at love and the actors portraying Tom and Summer really are perfect for the parts. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel do great with the roles and really come across as realistic and honest with their parts.
(500)Days of Summer is a good romantic comedy and well worth watching at least once but may not be the perfect film for ownership. The video and audio is great and really well worth the effort of sitting through the sometimes confusing back and forth in their relationship.
The video is a great high definition presentation with really good color, especially skin tones like the numerous shots we see of Zooey Deschanel and her knees, neck and other smooth skinned lingering shots. The video also has well done darks and lighting that really does set some of the mood in scenes and the main feel for the film.
Some scenes are more neutral in tone and gives the film a more lifelike and honest feel than a romantic comedy tends to be. The video is well done and really helps the general feel and emotion of the film and the audio adds to this even more.
Audio is the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track that does a great job to aid in the feeling of hopelessness Tom feels in the inevitable end of his relationship with Summer. The films songs are well done and even perfect to the moments of each of the films various days and events.
The audio matches the films video and total feel for a great and honest romantic comedy that makes you really believe in what is happening to poor Tom and his relationship by the end. The bonus content on the Blu-ray edition contain about an hour and a half of making of, Sundance Film Festival features and the usual audio commentary.
The bonus content is sort of hit and miss with the usual mix that show the cast having fun and wanting the film to succeed and some of the off stuff like a couple of casting auditions. The bonus content adds some to the film and some is really worth it if you enjoyed the film but others are more of a one time is more than enough.
The bonus features are your average mixed bag that usually accompanies films and is more than just a couple of tossed in extras that add up to be worthwhile overall. (500) Days of Summer is one of those genuine heartfelt romantic films that adds comedy not in the hilarious jokes but as the everyday happenings of life that can be funny in themselves.
The Blu-ray release of (500)Days of Summer includes the Blu-ray movie disc and a digital copy of the film but with no standard DVD disc. (500)Days of Summer is well worth seeing and one of those sleeper hits that does great at film festivals because it is so realistic and heartfelt but may not be for everyone.
