High Sierra Canyon Lumbar Pack

The High Sierra Lumbar Pack is a high adventure water bottle holder and gear storage pack that is comfortable, handy for long treks and has plenty of room for storage. The Canyon has one large main compartment centered on the pack with two insulated side holders for the two 1000ml Lexan water bottles.

The lumbar pack has two waist wings that are padded along your waist for comfortable wear of the pack and an extra convenient strap system for added adjustment. The strap system may seem a bit confusing but it makes for an easy on the trail adjustment to get the pack adjusted just right.

The strap has clips to hold the extra strap and two zippered pockets on the waist wings for small things like keys, a wallet or bike tools. One end of each side strap mounts securely to each waist wing then goes through the middle buckle and then mounts on the sides of the pack through the bottle holders to secure the pack for wear.

Waist Wings and Straps

To tighten the lumbar pack you first adjust the straps and the two side straps will allow you to loosen and tighten the pack while wearing easily from the sides. This two strap system is comfortable and allows for an easy adjustment on the trail without having to take the pack off.

The two strap arrangement allows the pack to rest comfortably on both the waist wings around your waist and makes for a very comfortable pack while on long trips. The main compartment has several features but is secured to the two waist wings with a long stitching to keep things secure and durable.

The main compartment has one main zipper on the top that goes part way down the sides and is quite large; I could install some padding and store my DSLR Canon Rebel camera with a medium sized lens for a day trek taking pictures while hiking. There is a side flat compartment on the back of the main pocket that is handy for maps or manuals but the main compartment is one large pocket that could easily fit a couple of meals for a day trek.

As a comparison for size I could fit my DSLR Camera with padding on all sides and the bottom or both sport bottles easily fit inside the main pocket. The main compartment also has a rubber grommet for use with a head phone, earpiece for a cell phone or even a hydration tube if you want to use the main pocket for a hydration pack.

Main Pocket w Water Bottles

The top of the pack has a loop for hanging the pack when not in use and a loop for hanging gear on the bottom as well as a two strap system with a flap and pocket for holding a bike helmet. Attaching an adult sized helmet is quite easy simply by opening the straps fully and pushing the helmet into the flap area and then tightening the straps.

You can clip the helmet strap through the loop at the top or bottom for added security and to make sure you don’t drop your helmet but I found placing the helmet into the strap and flap was enough to keep it in place. The addition of a place to put a bike helmet adds to the versatility of the lumbar pack for an all around day trekking pack to carry your gear.

Melmet on Canyon Pack

The pack is very comfortable with padding on the back of the pack as well as along the wings that snuggly fit around your waist while wearing. The two insulated bottle holders are nice and the included Lexan bottles make a nice addition to the pack for a real adventure pack.

You can also leave the Lexan bottles at home but I found it is nice to use a couple of carbineer clips to hold the holsters in so they do not jut out from the pack when not in use. The top of the holsters have a loop and the bottom has a strap that is the bottom of the holster for the bottles that easily clip together under the helmet flap to keep them tucked out of the way.

The holsters feature a bungee cord to keep your bottles in place when in the holsters even during rough terrain whether hiking or biking so the bottles will not fall out. The bottles are a nice 1000 ml size made from shatter resistant Lexan with a wide mouth for easy filling even of ice cubes and has a loop for the top so you don’t lose that.

The Canyon lumbar pack is an excellent day or weekend pack for those long treks out in the woods and is comfortable whether your carrying a lunch for two or a full sized DSLR camera with padding. I found that weighing the pack down with my camera and trekking around the woods was fun and using the pack for this double duty for photography was great.

The padding that comes with many photography bags easily Velcro’s together to create added protection for a camera to use the Canyon pack for photography. The Canyon pack is also a fantastic pack for biking as it is comfortable with the wide waist wings that grip around your middle instead of just a  strap like some packs have.

For a great day pack or long trek pack to carry a decent amount of gear like lunch with the two sport bottles the Canyon Lumbar Pack from High Sierra is a great choice. I highly recommend the Canyon Lumbar Pack as a great all around pack for your hiking and biking gear.
