MAgellan RoadMate 5045

The Magellan RoadMate 5045 GPS unit is a car navigator that includes the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico maps along with traffic updates where available. The $150 GPS unit does have a USB connection for power and connecting to a computer for map updates along with a microSD card slot for storing your address book and other data.

The Magellan RoadMate 5045 is very similar, almost identical, model to the 3065 that I reviewed in October but does have a larger screen but not the Bluetooth pairing. Both models have an internal Lithium Ion battery, microSD slot, touch screen and USB connectivity for both power and PC connections.

The main difference that I could tell between the two is the screen size and the fact that the larger screened 5045 does not have Bluetooth pairing capability for phones. The screen size is a nice but not exactly huge difference while the Bluetooth does make the difference if that is something you are interested in.

The screen size is the major difference and the cost shows this as the larger screen is about $20 dollars more at $150 for the larger screened model even with the lack of Bluetooth. The main features of a favorites menu, highway lane assist, AAA tour book features, spoken directions, traffic assist and more are all great features.

Whats in the Box

I found some of the features were identical to the previous Magellan RoadMate I reviewed but the ones that were most impressive were common to both. The spoken directions and lane assist is really worthwhile and the rerouting when you either make a bad turn or refuse to follow the nagging navigator are ones I thoroughly enjoy.

The spoken directions when you’re driving alone is nice but when the GPS unit gives you directions on what lane you need to be in when traveling on highways can make a big difference. Several times in traveling, even on routes close to home, I or my wife has been close to missing the exit or a few times we have been in the wrong lane and missed the correct split when that interstate highway splits into two highways.

The Magellan RoadMate 5045 will tell and show you exactly what the sign shows so you can be in that lane to get to your destination. Highway Lane Assist is one great feature but the routes and getting to your destination when you do go the wrong way is going to make or break this vehicle GPS unit.

I tried to confuse and get the RoadMate lost but could not successfully do that, instead when making wrong turns whether to stop at some store or just trying to confuse the unit always resulted in recalculation and a new route. The new route takes the form of an updated path instead of taking a U turn that is usually illegal which makes a great feature for many.

This makes a big difference when traveling as you are very unsure many times whether a U turn is legal and often you really don’t want to bother going around in circles. Most of the time the unit did give us a new route without U turns but sometimes when we were close to our destination we would have to reroute directly behind us which meant a U turn or going around the block.

More often the unit just told us to go around but a couple of times it did come up with the Please make a legal U turn phrase while testing it out which was okay for the couple of times it tried this on us. The routes are really good and even in smaller towns around the North Dakota and Minnesota area where we live the unit was very up to date and roads are in the database and maps.

The two towns where we live and work as well as shop do have a lot of new construction over the past few years and the unit does have several updates that I was surprised about. Other roads are not updated and some are long time roads that are just not on the unit even though I have personally been using them for at least three or four years now.

I was very impressed with the routes and being able to get to several small town destinations and addresses even when I had no expectations the destination would be on the unit. The RoadMate 5045 is a fully featured vehicle navigator and really does work well for traveling and finding your way whether in town or out in the country.

Main Menu

Of course destinations and addresses may not be available, one of my relative’s country farm that has been there for many years is not but the address of my relatives newer log home is. This is probably due to updates to addresses due to new construction as opposed to mapping homes that have been around for years.

The other features like saving addresses and destinations in your address book and the obvious AAA features like ratings are also great and work very well. I did not find any features that did not work on the RoadMate 5045 and was impressed with the 5045 as a great general purpose vehicle GPS unit to help you find your destination while driving.

The larger screen does make enough of a difference that seeing it is a bit easier so the more expensive larger screen is worth purchasing on the RoadMate 5045. I highly recommend the Magellan RoadMate 5045 for a great vehicle GPS navigator that will get you where you want go without the fancy Bluetooth of other Magellan units.
