Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway

These AI problems don’t occur all the time but enough to get annoying and by the ending of the single player missions you will sometimes forget the squad tactics and get the job done by yourself. The game is all about the squad tactics though and they did an overall good job with it, they just didn’t get everything right.

The graphics are pretty good for the most part but some of the complaints deal more with the game engine and not visuals like how guns fire in wrong directions. I found this disconcerting to say the least and very troublesome at times, guns need to shoot where they are pointed and not in directions they aren’t.

The first few times I noticed this particular glitch I shrugged it off but when trying to time my running with a howitzer pointing way off to my left and to have a round hit right I front of me was bad. I would often run from one spot of cover to another when I could see the big guns pointing the other way but this game makes this point moot.

Many times not only individuals but tanks and howitzers would shoot in one direction with bullets and shells hitting in another. This makes looking at the weapons and seeing which way they are pointed a waste of time and using my squads to keep guys pinned kind of pointless.

In several missions you have howitzers or tanks and having them taken care of by your squads, pinned or just as bait, would not make much sense while I tried to flank the big guns. I would be running along happy to see the big muzzles all pointed at the other side of the battlefield when shells would hit alarmingly close.

But to look back and see that big gun still pointed somewhere else and suddenly see the shells come at you with their blurring trail of disturbed air is just wrong. It sure makes some parts of the game hard like when you’re supposed to rush to the back of the tank and plant explosives on it but which way is that gun going to shoot.

Other graphics work out well and some of the in game scenes are really good looking with plenty of good graphics and effects as well as good music and audio. The game was well made except for some large glitches and problems but overall it turned out pretty decent. Hells Highway just needed a little tweaking and perfecting and it would have been a great addition to the Brothers in Arms series.

The multiplayer experience in Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway seems very much an afterthought or add on to give more value after the game was built. The multiplayer gaming is nothing that has not been done before in games of this type and squad play is out the window except as individuals want to.

You have a general raise the flag instead of capture the flag and you need to fight your way to the flag pole in squads and raise the flag with teams. Each game session will have you starting as either a specialist, leader or crew with a variety of weapons belonging to each type. In each gaming session you will trade off positions so having your share of time as each is only a few minutes away.

You need to stay together and work as squads or teams in order to accomplish the goal of raising your flag or defending your pole but this takes teamwork. Without some communication or just plain common sense the squad form does not work well or works great according to each member and this is where the game is either good or terrible.

If you have team players who stay with the group and work together it can be fun but if too many go off on their own than it can be tough or even miserable. In the multiplayer there us twenty person limit on each map and some pretty basic graphics and textures down from the games better ones on single player.

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway takes the squad concept of teamwork and use of flanking to a high ideal and makes a fun game for a World War II first person shooter. If you enjoyed the previous Brothers in Arms games this one will surely have you chomping at the bit for more as well as giving you several hours of fun.

If you have not played the previous BIA games you will have no problem jumping into the fray with this one and enjoying your tour through Holland. I highly recommend Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway for one of the best tactical first person shooters for either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3.
