Thermaltake Toughpower XT

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750 watt power supply part number W0229RU is a tough and high performance power supply capable of delivering power to RAID and multi video card systems. The Toughpower XT PSU that I received for reviewing is rated at 750 watts which is more than I need for either of my systems.

The Toughpower XT series from Thermaltake has seven models in the XT series with four in the Cable Management and three in the standard series. All the Thermaltake Toughpower XT series of power supplies are ATI Crossfire X and 80 Plus certified with power ranging from 650 to 850 watts.

The power supplies all come with 20 plus 4 pin motherboard connectors and a range of addition connectors but the Cable Management series have removable cables. This allows you to use only the cables you need for your system and keep clutter to a minimum and maximize airflow.

On the model I received the Molex HDD and motherboard connections for the cables are colored black and grouped in one area while the six and eight pin video card cables are red in another group. This varied coloring for cables makes building your system easy and working on your computer more simplified for easier system maintenance.

Cable Connections

The Toughpower XT 750 watt power supply has plenty of power to run two, three or four video card systems as well as systems using a RAID array. The 750 watts gives enough power for the higher wattage CPU’s as well like the Core i7 from Intel that requires more power.

The Power supply comes in a very nice box with almost enough cables to connect two systems or one with so many peripherals you could choke a horse. I am not kidding when I say this with 2 SATA power cables, 2 eight pin PCI-E cables, 2 Molex and 4 pin connector cables, 2 six pin PCI-E cables, 2 eight pin to six pin PCI-E adapters and one four pin motherboard power cable with extender.

The power supply even comes with a Velcro closure bag to keep the extra power cables tidy when not being used in a system along with four Velcro straps for keeping things tidy inside your case. The power supply also comes with a manual, power cord and a rubber gasket to keep noise down from vibration in your system along with four screws.

Whats in the Box

The power supply is as complete a package as I have seen with not only the power supply and necessary accessories but with the case and straps that I was impressed when I opened the package. The power supply is very easy to install with all the cables being modular except the main motherboard power cable which is a nice length to fit even large computer cases.

All the cables are long enough and with the long main power cable I had no problems installing this in my new Thermaltake Element S case and my older Thermaltake Spedo. The power supply has the four pin power supply cable to the motherboard for those systems that need this as well as the 8 inch extension if you need the extra length in a larger case.

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT seems made just for those full tower cases as the cables are quite long so they reach where you need them to. The power supply has a few nice features once it is installed and one that may be unnecessary in the indicator of problems like standby, PG Signal and overheat indicators.

Problem with these indicators is when installed on a system with the power supply on the bottom and the fan facing up the indicators are on the wrong side. It would be pure luck if your system has an opening on the motherboard bottom side that allows you to see the indicators so this feature is really not used.

The power supply also has three modes for running the fan after shutdown in automatic, 15 and 30 seconds after shutdown with the longest time of running after power off being 30 seconds. The auto mode will keep the fan running as long as the system inside the PSU deems necessary up to that 30 second mark.

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT also has the solid capacitors for a long life and a very quiet fan to help cool things down internally for a longer lifespan. The Thermaltake Toughpower XT series of power supplies also have a five year warranty so the company does stand behind their products.

This particular model of power supply does come with a hefty price tag at about $175 from several internet stores but that is the price you will pay for the best. This power supply does come with quite a warranty of five years while many of the supplies I have reviewed only have a one year.

The Thermaltake power supply also tested just fine on all the voltages that were well within the specifications as you would expect. Although I do check them while running the supply I see no need to give results as the voltages would have to be within specs in order for my system to run at all.

Toughpower XT Installed

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750 watt power supply may be a bit on the pricey side but I can easily see this as a great power supply that will last for the five years without having to upgrade for most computer system builders. The supply has all the necessary cables and connections for upgrading and has the warranty to back up using it for a long period of time in a current and future system.

The Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750 watt power supply is well worth the cost and for those wanting a top of the line power supply that will last you can’t go wrong with Thermaltake.
