SensorSweep and SensorSwipe

Copper Hill Images has done a great job of providing the simplest solution to dust on your cameras sensor in the SensorSweep cleaning brush. Add to this the simple and effective wet cleaning using the PecPad system and you have one great product that every camera owner needs.

Copper Hill Images has a whole line of camera cleaning supplies for those hard to clean places on your digital camera for both professionals and amateurs. They sent me a set that includes a brush for dry cleaning the sensor on my Canon Rebel XSi as well as the wet cleaning that includes the SensorSwipe and PecPads with a small bottle of Eclipse cleaning fluid.

The Wet/Dry kit includes the SensorSweep brush inside a tube and case, vellum paper for charging the brush, a 2 ounce bottle of Eclipse cleaning fluid, a 100 pack of PecPads, the SensorSwipe and instructions for the whole lot. The dry cleaning brush uses static electricity to grab dust from your cameras sensor while the wet cleaning uses the rubber tipped SensorSwipe stick and the PecPads slightly moistened with the Eclipse fluid to really get a clean sensor.

Whats in the Wet/Dry Kit

My camera, which is brand new, cost me about $830 shipped and is going to last me for years of product shots as well as the occasional family portrait or vacationing. An investment like this is going to also include some additional expenses and one should be some cleaning supplies and tools. After using another camera for my product shots for almost a year and noticing dust in the shots that I had to get rid of using the Photoshop method I wondered how every other photographer cleans their camera.

I found a few solutions but one that stood out in the cost area was Copper Hill Images and their line of cleaning products like the one they sent me. I have a good understanding of cleaning things like computer components and did my fair share of cleaning things in the military but one job stands out in my mind when using the PecPads and cleaning the sensor. I worked on a disc drive that had these 14 inch hard discs and we had to clean the drive heads that floated over the discs. We used these wands with little sleeves and a solution just like the method used for camera sensors.

Gentle wiping and a very clean solution to get the dust and dirt and most importantly not leave any residue behind was the order of the day on those computer hard drives and the sensors on my camera are almost identical. You use a SensorSwipe that has a rubber tip like a spatula and a PecPad wrapped around the tip to gently rub the sensor and clean off any dust and anything else that might have gotten onto your sensor.
