Thermaltake Spedo

The Spedo full tower case from Thermaltake is a very nice computer case with plenty of features including tool less installation and removal of drives and PCI cards. The Spedo has the air handling using a front 140mm fan and two 120mm exhaust fans out the back standard.

You can add additional fans on the side directly under the motherboard, on the top using a medium to large fan and even on a movable adapter on the back of the drive bays. The Spedo incorporates plenty of unique designs to make any computer enthusiast happy with its flexibility in design.

The Spedo is a large full tower case at 21.1 inches tall by 9.1 inches wide and 24 inches front to back and weighs about 27.3 pounds without any computer hardware. The version I am reviewing is the Spedo edition without the advanced package which includes dividers and a side window.

The front panel uses snap in metal slots with a grill pattern for use as removable spacers where DVD drives are not to configure any of the top and bottom front panel spaces as open for drives. The front panel connections including two USB, one SATA and the two audio connections are actually on the top of the case while the power and rest buttons and indicators are on the front corner on the right side.

The standard edition has an open design and incorporates plenty of features for the enthusiast and computer overclocker to give the maximum airflow and open roomy design for working comfort inside your case. The case has the front drive bays with tool less installation using a push lever mechanism that works very well at securing the drives. Both the 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch drives secure the same way in the 6 available 3.5 inch bays and 7 5.5 inch bays.

A 2.5 inch hard drive or floppy disc drive can be installed in one of the 3.5 inch bays in the center using the provided adapter and front panel slot for the floppy drive. The DVD/CD drives can be installed in any of the top four or bottom three drive slots while the six hard drive slots are in two removable drive bays in the center.

You can install additional fans to enhance air flow with the two rear exhaust and one intake fan that are included with the Spedo using the top, bottom and both side panel mounting options. The left side panel that is used most often on cases as the access has two spaces for fans as well as an open vent for additional air flow.

The right side panel has one panel vent space directly on the side of the center drive bays and another directly under your motherboard where there is a place to mount another fan. You can mount a 120mm fan to blow air onto or away from the bottom of your motherboard that lines up well with the CPU area of Intel and AMD motherboards.

The top mount area allows you to mount a 120mm to a 200mm fan with a little finagling but you can easily mount a 120 or 140mm fan there to move air in or out. You can also install a fan on an adjustable bar inside to help move air out from the drive area to increase air flow to or from individual drives for additional air flow if needed.

Except for the left side panel all fans, front panel connections, indicators and buttons are securely on the chassis of the case and not on removable panels. This means you can pull off all the panels possible and not have any wiring still connecting the panels for real convenience when building or working inside your computer.

Using air flow with the wide variety of mounting positions for fans I think this case has plenty of choices for configuring the case for maximum cooling for whatever system you care to install. The Spedo case has plenty of slots but the addition of a motherboard fan increases the air flow to critical components around the CPU area on the bottom for better cooling there as well.
