I usually don’t even mention the packaging of products unless there is sufficient reason and this is one of them, the package has those egg carton like cardboard pieces to keep the drive protected in shipping and is totally recyclable as well. This drive can be called Green and they do mean it not only in the drive enclosure manufacturing like reusing the scrap aluminum making up 30% of the aluminum in manufacturing but in usage.

The energy savings is great with the automatic shut off as well as using an energy efficient power adapter to run the drive that increases the savings you have while having the adapter plugged in. If you’re worried about using all that power while having the drive plugged in the drive does shut down when it does not sense any USB connection like when you turn your computer off. This is a great feature as I usually shut off my external hard drives, speakers and any other peripherals to save on energy while not using my computer.

AN Inside Look

Having things shut off automatically like my monitors and now my external hard drive makes more sense money wise as well as for the environment. The [re]drive is a great drive overall and the backup functions that comes with the drive also work well for a great overall external hard drive to use for backup and storage.

The [re]drive has a nice aluminum enclosure that you screw the drive to that acts as a large heat sink as well as holding the drive and USB adapter. The drive comes with a few programs preinstalled as well as an offer to use the SimpleTech Online Backup services if you wish but you can use the internal backup program right from the start.

The ArcSoft Total Media Backup and Record software installs in a few minutes and allows you to record or burn discs, back up files and important information like emails, favorites and system settings on your computer. The Total Media program does a great job of making backups easy to perform and easy to recover using the program that helps you step by step through the process.

One part I really enjoy about the backup is the use of three different back up types with Photo, Music and Video as one, Personal Documents as the next and advanced as the third. Using the backup software you can tell the computer to back up any files using file extensions for music, video or photos, files associated with certain programs like Word, or Office and any file folders you wish to save on a regular basis like certain working files for websites.

As an example if you want to back up any photos on your system you can simply tell the software to backup any JPG extension items and the backup software will search for any not backed up previously. This means not having to ensure all photos your working with are in folders specifically but your back up will hunt down any photos that are using the JPG extension.

You can do this with other file types specifically like Word, or other word processing files, email program files or by folders through your usual file folder tree as well. If you have folders you want regularly backed up simply go to advanced and pick the folder you want to add to a routine back up and the program will back up that file according to the schedule.

The TotalMedia Backup is a great program and has replaced my previous backup program as my routine backup that I perform daily. I have important information like emails and my website that I have to backup routinely to ensure I do not lose all those important contacts I have with companies and my website files.

The ArcSoft TotalMedia backup program works very well and is a great part of the [re]drive hard drive enclosure for a great overall package. The [re]drive is a great external hard drive enclosure that is not only a great performing drive but also includes the ArcSoft TotalMedia backup and recording program as well as the energy saving and Green product features.

I highly recommend the [re]drive for a great external hard drive that performs well and has plenty of features for a drive ready to use as your backup and storage solution.
