My first system is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ BE running at 3.01 GHz on a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 motherboard with 4GB of memory and an NZXT Performance Power 800 Watt PSU. The other computer I ran tests with is an Intel Quad Core Q6600 running at 2.95 GHz on an ECS P45T-A motherboard with 4GB of memory and an Apevia Iceberg 680 Watt PSU.
Both systems are running at overclock but only by upping the core speeds without changing the voltages of the core at all and is rock stable using Prime95 Torture testing overnight. Both systems I ran the tests on have been defragmented and updated fully and all games are fully updated, I won’t bore you with all the specifics of versions and such.
I ran tests three times and have averaged out the scores for the results and ran tests concurrently to show results that are accurate on both systems against the various cards I used. I ran the AMD system with both the HD 3870 X2 and the PNY 9800 GTX+ to show results comparing the AMD side and the Intel Q6600 system with the PNY 9800 GTX+ against the Zotac 8800 GT.
Results will show that the PNY 9800 GTX+ of course performed better than the NVIDIA 8800 GT but also better than the ATI HD 3870 X2 as well. The 9800 GTX+ did better on most of the frame rate tests checking in real world gaming for both high resolution and when I ran some tests using various anti-aliasing settings.
Results for the Futuremark 3DMark Vantage comparing the general graphics capabilities of the 9800 GTX+ against the HD 3870 X2 show an increase of almost 900 points. This is pretty impressive since the PNY 9800 GTX+ is a single core graphics card and the ATI HD 3870 X2 is a dual core card.
Other results show at least some if not as much as ten to eleven frames per second improvement in most of the games, a few games do not have any improvement and a couple like Microsoft Flight Sim X has some odd results but I have come to expect that from this game. Overall I feel that the results really do speak for themselves, while we would expect to see an increase with both frame rates in games and benchmark scores for synthetic testing from one generation to the next we also beat the dual core graphics card with a single core of the next generation.
