The Futura from LapWorks is a real mixed bag but it does its job well and can be used several different ways; as a lap desk for holding your notebook or laptop computer or as a stand for your notebook on a desk or other surface. The Futura comes in a huge variety of colors and finishes so you can choose the inexpensive $29.95 gunmetal gray or a selection of various colors, patterns and finishes for $49.95.
They are also going to be offering a create your own custom Futura with your own picture for $69.95 in the coming months, you’ll have to check their website for further details about the custom printing orders for the Futura. Just the neat finishes and patterns like camou or various colors is nice and the foldable lap desk does work well as designed.
The lap desk is 11” x 21” foldable High Impact ABS plastic that is shaped to hold a laptop computer for easy use in your lap. The Futura also folds and has a stand that folds down to create a notebook stand for use on a desk of other surface. The high impact plastic is sturdy but a couple of parts of the lap desk are not quite strong enough.
I do have a couple of problems with the Futura right off the bat that I will get to and put behind me. When messing around with the stand I did break the small plastic stand where it connects to the rest of the Futura. This plastic post is where the stand part holds the small plastic piece for propping the stand up between the two sides. I easily drilled the plastic piece out and added a length of metal to the stand but you may not be as resourceful and able to fix yours.
I also could not snap shut the foldable lap desk after first opening it as the notch that snaps shut and holds the lap desk closed is very small and does not seem built to withstand much use. It has a small bump to hold the unit shut but it does not do a very good job and I also noticed another reviewer mention his did the same thing.
These are not large issues unless you are going to be using the Futura as a stand and cannot fix it yourself but I am sure the company will replace the stand if it breaks as they do have a satisfaction guarantee and plenty of information on the cardboard insert that comes with the stand about returns and customer service.
The lap desk configuration works very well and is quite comfortable while holding my wife’s laptop on my lap and not having any problems with heat on my legs. The wide lap desk has a nice sturdy feel and when opened the hinged area angles to hold the Futura steady and flat. The lap desk sits nicely on a table or desk with the small rubber feet all over the laptop area for resting the bottom of your laptop on.
