The power adapter does not come with the Shuttle but can be purchased separately for better drive performance with a single ended USB cable. The Shuttle drive enclosure comes with and works with a USB cable that has two USB ends to supply enough power to the drive but can also work with the external power adapter and a single ended USB cable.
I do have a power adapter for another device that is the correct tip size and power ratings and have tried out the Shuttle ST with it and it also works just fine with a single ended USB and the external power adapter. The extra power the drive may need from the extra power adapter may not be necessary all the time as it may depend on how much power your computer is supplying.
I used the Shuttle ST on my desktop systems and my laptops and a few times tried it out with the single USB and it worked just fine but other times it does not transfer the files completely. A few times the computer will lose the drive from its management system and the drive will just not appear on the computer drives list. All you need to do is use the Y cable USB that comes with the Shuttle ST to ensure enough power for the drive and the system you are using it with for optimum performance.
The Shuttle ST works very well as a portable hard drive solution for backing up your computer or just carrying around your files and data. I recently recorded some TV shows and found it handy to just record directly to the drive so when others in the family want to see the show they can just grab the drive and open the file on their computer.
Backing up your system and having the portable drive enclosure handy for using wherever you want is another great way to use the Shuttle ST.
