Plextor ConvertX

There are all kinds of free or OEM software that comes with products and this is the main problem with most of the hardware solutions for capturing video or TV on your computer. They send you partial OEM software that works well but is very limited and does not do a great job of capturing or editing your captured video and audio. The Plextor ConvertX PVR works well enough and the software is adequate but it does its job and that’s about it.

The ConvertX PVR model PX-TV402U comes with the Converter itself, a power adapter and cord, a set of audio and video cables with RCA connections, software drivers, WinDVR 5, WinDVD Creator 2 and an OEM version of VideoStudio 8 from Ulead. The software from Ulead and InterVideo works but that’s about it but does a pretty decent job of editing your video with a preset amount of configuration options. I have found that the free program from Microsoft called Movie Maker that comes with Windows Vista is more of a feature rich software program and easier to use.

The Plextor ConvertX works very well and does a great job of capturing video on your computer. Setup is very easy but you do need to download some software for the most up to date and useable versions. Just using the included software may not get your capture to work but downloading the Plextor GoCap will, it is a great little program that handles all the interface of your capturing easily and quickly. From this program you have a few settings and quick start options that make changing channels, capturing TV and other video and audio easy and simple. You can set which input you use between the SVideo, composite or TV tuner as well as some other settings and record from the quick interface with the click of a button.

Through the Plextor GoCap you can change channels and do most everything you need but for things like recording straight to the software that comes with the package I just could not get it to work easily. I am not the only one who has the same problems as I found plenty on the internet that could also not get the WinDVR 5 to work. The software is a very mixed bag so I am not sure this would be a great product but it does work very well with the Plextor GoCap.
